Tips for hanging, mounting and protecting your wild bird feeders...
-
While some tube type wild bird feedeers and many wooden bird feeders, which are NOT squirrel proof, can be post mounted, often they will be hung from a tree limb, a pole or hook (such as a shepherd hook - RECOMMENDED), or even a coated wire you may have around the house. Whatever method you choose that fits your needs and surroundings, IF you don't want squirrels interrupting your birds' dining experience, you will need a squirrel guard or squirrel baffle to protect your wild bird feeders from your pesky back yard denizens. Please link here to find the perfectly suited protection for the wild bird feeders of your choice. Your tube tpye feeder and wooden bird feeder will be protected from tenacious squirrels and, with the proper above feeder guard or weather shield, from the weather as well.
-
For on top post mounting, we recommend a wrap around baffle placed 4 feet or more above ground and at least 8 feet from trees or buildings. A shepherd hook or pole will accept the right sized wrap around baffle as well.
-
Generally we suggest that only truly squirrel proof feeders or cage type bird feeders be hung from a tree limb. Often even wild bird feeders with a baffle above can be reached by a squirrel adroitly jumping from a nearby tree limb or branch. However, an appropriately rounded shaped dome baffle, placed at a proper distance above your feeder, will definitely do the trick. You may need to experiment.
